PB IKAMI SULSEL Demands Immediate Indonesian Government Action Over Detention of Andi Angga Prasadewa by Israel
INTERNASIONAL
Jakarta – Pengurus Besar Ikatan Kekeluargaan Mahasiswa/Pelajar Indonesia Sulawesi Selatan (PB IKAMI SULSEL) strongly condemns the interception and detention carried out by the Israeli military against a humanitarian vessel participating in the Global Sumud Flotilla expedition in international waters near Cyprus. One of the volunteers aboard the vessel Josef who was also detained is Andi Angga Prasadewa, one of the finest cadres and a humanitarian representative from South Sulawesi who departed with the humanitarian institution Rumah Zakat.
Responding to this emergency situation, the Head of the International Relations Division of PB IKAMI SULSEL, Muhammad Fauzan Alimuddin, stated that the Indonesian government must no longer merely throw rhetoric or normative appeals in the mass media. The case involving Andi Angga Prasadewa is a matter of national dignity and absolute protection for Indonesian citizens abroad.
“We firmly emphasize that the safety of our brother, Andi Angga Prasadewa, and all humanitarian volunteers is non-negotiable. The Government of Indonesia through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemlu) must immediately take tactical and concrete measures on the ground, not merely issue statements of concern or written appeals that fail to address the root of the problem,” stressed Fauzan Alimuddin in his written statement on Tuesday (19/5).
Demanding Concrete Action Through Cross-Embassy Coordination and Multilateral Pressure
Fauzan added that the absence of official diplomatic relations between Indonesia and Israel must not be used as an excuse for delayed action. PB IKAMI SULSEL urges the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia to immediately mobilize all available diplomatic instruments.
There are five concrete demands submitted by the International Relations Division of PB IKAMI SULSEL to the government:
- Cross-Embassy Mobilization of the Nearest Indonesian Missions:
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia must immediately instruct and deploy special teams from the nearest Indonesian embassies—such as KBRI Amman, KBRI Kairo, KBRI Ankara, and KBRI Roma—to move toward the nearest transit point in Cyprus. The physical presence of diplomatic representatives is crucial to directly monitor real-time updates regarding the physical condition, legal status, and fulfillment of the victims’ fundamental rights, especially the health and safety of the victims who are being taken to Israeli military floating detention facilities. - Multilateral Diplomacy and Collective Pressure:
The Indonesian government must build collective strength with friendly countries whose citizens are also participating as volunteers in the convoy or countries with strong diplomatic influence in the conflict region. This international collective pressure must be directed aggressively to urge Israeli authorities to immediately provide an official statement regarding the detention status, place of detention, and safety guarantees for our brother from South Sulawesi and all other delegates. - Indonesia as President of the UN Human Rights Council:
With Indonesia’s position as President of the UN Human Rights Council, Indonesia should be able to take concrete measures such as reporting violations against journalists and humanitarian volunteers to the UN Human Rights Council. Considering that the convoy included not only volunteers such as Andi Angga (Rumah Zakat), but also journalists from national media outlets (Republika, Tempo, iNews), this detention violates resolutions concerning the protection of civilians in conflict zones.Through the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Indonesia (PTRI) in Geneva and New York, the government can submit an Urgent Appeal to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). This step would compel independent international teams to enter Israel in order to inspect the detention status of the five Indonesian citizens and ensure they are protected from physical intimidation or unilateral legal actions by Zionist authorities. At the very least, such concrete measures would provide actual certainty regarding the condition of Indonesian citizens currently under detention.
- Support from the South Sulawesi Government for Its Citizens Who Were Detained:
In addition to the role of the central government, we also expect coordination with the victims’ families through the South Sulawesi Government to maintain communication regarding this detention. The role of the South Sulawesi Government, as an extension of the central government, is expected to help ease the panic experienced by the victims’ families. - Commission I of the DPR Through the G-to-G Inter-Parliamentary Union Role:
As the parliamentary institution overseeing defense, foreign affairs, communication and informatics, and intelligence, Commission I of the DPR is expected to take concrete steps by utilizing informal G-to-G channels to directly communicate with parliamentary leaders of friendly countries whose citizens were also detained aboard the humanitarian expedition vessel.
Monitoring the Case Until Resolution
PB IKAMI SULSEL stated that it will continue to monitor the detention case of Andi Angga Prasadewa until there is legal clarity and his return to Indonesia. This largest South Sulawesi student association organization at the national level will also establish communication with Rumah Zakat as the sending institution to consolidate manifest data and advocacy movements, as well as with the family to help calm all parties through the presence of PB IKAMI SULSEL as a youth organization that cares about Indonesian citizens, particularly those from South Sulawesi.
“Andi Angga Prasadewa departed carrying a noble humanitarian mission, representing Indonesia and the pride of the people of South Sulawesi for world peace. It is extremely naive if the state allows our humanitarian fighter to remain stranded without clarity in the hands of a foreign military. We await concrete, courageous, and tactical action from the Minister of Foreign Affairs within the next few hours.”
In addition, Andi Angga is Fauzan’s classmate and batchmate during their education at Pesantren IMMIM Makassar. Naturally, there is a deep sense of sadness and emotional attachment when a close friend who is fighting for Indonesia is detained by Israel, concluded Muhammad Fauzan Alimuddin in closing his statement.
